Who Is A Leader?

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” (John Quincy Adams)

Hi Everyone!

This week’s post has to do with leadership. One good paragraph.

What does it mean to be a leader? What qualities do you feel a leader needs to have?

In addition to the questions above, please answer the following questions based on your definition on what it means to be a leader:

Pretend that you could invite any leader, alive or dead, to come and speak to your school. Whom would you invite and why? What would you want your leader to talk about?

  1. Charlie :) REAL VERSION says:

A leader to me is someone who is always there for you, and does a thing that inspires you. A leader to me should be smart, and have common sense. If I could pick any leader to speak at our school it would totally be Neil Armstrong the astronaut. I would want Neil Armstrong to speak at our school because he was the first person to step foot on a different planet. If Neil Armstrong could speak at our school I would want him to talk about his journey to the moon, and how it felt to him. I would also want Neil Armstrong to talk about how he became an astronaut, and what it took to become one. Lastly, I think Neil Armstrong is one of the beast leaders of all time!

  2. Carlos says:

A leader is someone who never gives up, helpful, and is also a role model. A person who has all these quantities is the one and only Steve Jobs. He never gave up on anything, and that’s why today millions of people talk to there friends on an IPhone. If I could invite Steve Jobs to Shorecrest it would be awesome! Steve Jobs would probably talk about the history of Apple, and how Apple began. I would ask him how he got the idea of an IPad. Steve Jobs was an amazing leader.

  3. Meredith says:

A leader is someone who inspires you, and that leads you into good situations. Some qualities that a good leader are bravery, honesty, and responsibility. I think honesty is a good quality, because you don’t want a leader telling you that their going to do something, and then not have them do it. I choose responsibility, because if you were a camp counselor and you were taking the kids at a camp on a field trip, then as their leader you need to make sure their safe. Bravery is also a good quality, because when your leading others you need to be brave socially and physically. If I could invite any leader to our school I would choose George Washington. I would want him to speak about leading the Revolutionary War, because this seems like a very hard thing to do, since they had limited resources. I would choose him, because he was our first president and I would like to know how he lead our country so well being the first president.

  4. Will A. says:

A leader is someone who you look up to, someone who has the qualities that you want to have when you grow up. Some of these qualities are kindness, helpfulness, respectfulness, athletic ect (Any quality that you want to have when you grow up.) If I were to choose any leader it would be General Patten. I would choose him because he was a leader of brave leader in the army. His rank was a four star general and that is a really rank to get into. Patton had such great leadership in WWI and WWII. Patton survived 9 military campaigns in his lifetime. I would like to know how he survived all of those obstacles in all of his battles. That’s why I would choose him, because he was a true leader in American history.

  5. Olivia says:

A leader is a person who leads a group of people to a common goal. They are never afraid of what will come their way. They want to achieve a common goal and will never stop until they do. Leaders have to be quick thinking in case of emergencies, and brave to face them. A leader must listen to everybody idea’s, thus being a good listener. They also need to never doubt that they will not achieve their goal.

Susan B. Anthony was all of these things. She knew that she could be shot at when she protested against unfair rights for women. She knew that what she did was so dangerous, that she may never see the day that women obtained equal rights. But she did it, because she wanted to reach her goal. Susan was brave; because she knew the dangers of her job, but was so selfless she did it anyway. I would invite her for her bravery and ablity to stand up for what she believed in. She also never doubted herself. If Susan came to Shorecrest, I would want her to talk about to her about what gave her the courage to stand up and face people with guns to share what she believed in.

“Failure is impossible.” – Susan B. Anthony

  6. Sydney says:

A leader contains a lot of amazing characteristics, but the ones I think are most important are bravery, courage, and standing up for what you believe. If I could invite one leader to come to my school, I would invite Sally Ride. I think Sally Ride is a great leader because she was very brave and decided to go into space. If it wasn’t for her there would not be any women astronauts. She believed that there should be women astronauts and they should be able to go up into space because women are just as good as men. If she ever came to my school to speak, I would be very excited to hear her story on how she became an astronaut and what work she had to do to get to that place.

Great job, William! Lots of detail!

A lot of people think that a leader has to be strong, rich or famous, well if someone told you that, than there wrong. A leader is someone who is nice, brave, a good role model, and my favorite is when a leader stands up for someone else. If I could invite anyone in the world to come to Shorecrest and speak to us, I would choose Martin Luther King Jr. I think that he is a perfect example of a leader because he is very nice, he is really brave, he is a great role model, and he really stands up for other people. When he came to our school, I would want him to tell us pretty much his whole entire life story, like when he was born, what schools he went to, when he died, and then I would want him to talk about his famous, “I Have a Dream” speech. I think that Martin Luther King Jr. is a great leader, who made this world different forever.

  10. Bella says:

A leader is someone who was faith, confidence, discipline and will stand up for themselves and others. I feel a leader has to show their respect to others. They will not back down during hard times, and try their hardest mostly all the time. If I could have a person come to our school and talk I would pick Abraham Lincoln. I would pick him because he had the courage to end slavery by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. He was in office during the American Civil War. I would enjoy listening to a president that showed confidence, and bravery.

    • Taylor E. says:

Nice description of what a leader is! I agree that a leader is not someone who will back down! You always have a great blog post! Good job. :)

  11. Camille says:

A leader is someone who watches over others. In my eyes a leader should be reliable because people believe and depend on you to make the write decisions. A leader should also be honest and trustworthy because you want people to believe you and trust you. When you say you’re going to keep a promise the person trusts that you’re going to be honest about keeping the promise.

If I could invite one leader I would invite Alice Paul because she was one of the many women to fight for women’s rights to vote. I would want her to talk about the process they went through in order to get the amendment pass so that women could vote.

  12. Jordan says:

Are you able to stand up for what you believe in, use great courage when needed, and be a kind person that people look up to? To me, these are the traits a leader should have. Being a leader means guiding people through life, taking responsibility, and encouraging others to live peacefully. I think that a person that’s a great example of a leader is the Dalai Lama. He’s an inspirational buddhist and a spiritual leader. His life goal is to spread a message of peace around the world. I would love for the Dalai Lama to come to Shorecrest to speak because I believe that most kids at our school would be inspired after they hear his messages. If this amazing leader did come to my school, he could explain to the students how he is helping to change the world, and how we can help. I believe that there are many leaders in the world, and the Dalai Lama is one of the best examples.

“Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’ help them, at least don’t hurt them.”

    -Dalai Lama

  13. LiLY says:

Being a leader means encouraging others to try their best. A leader should be intelligent, and have a good sense of humor. If I could invite any leader to come to Shorecrest, I would invite Bethany Hamilton, because she seems like a very intelligent and inspiring leader. I would want Bethany Hamilton to talk about “getting back on the board”. In other words, not giving up even if something terrible had happened. I also think a leader should have great perseverance. Bethany Hamilton did have fabulous perseverance. She is my inspiration and a great leader.

  14. Sophie says:

I think that a leader is someone who you can trust to do the right thing, and make the right decision even when it is the hard one to make. A leader is not perfect, but is someone who stands up for what they believe in. A leader encourages other people to do the right thing. I think that a leader needs to have many qualities. A leader needs to be considerate to other people’s ideas, but they need to be opinionated too. They should be brave and willing to go out and lead people through a tough situation, and determined to solve a problem.

If I could choose any leader to come to our school and speak I would choose Malala Yusufzai. She is a fourteen year old girl. She is from Pakistan where women do not get a lot of freedom. She recently spoke out, and said that she wanted to go to school. She stood up for herself and all the others girls that wanted to go to school. That shows the traits of being a leader because she was determined to go to school. She was brave to risk the chance of death to lead people to make the right decisions about girls. Unfortunately, she was shot by the Taliban for being a good leader. She is still alive, and recovering in an English hospital. She would talk to our school about what made her stand up for what she believed in and do the right thing. Also she would talk about how important school is for her, and if she was happy that she made the decision to speak out. She is true leader.

  15. Preston says:

I think a leader is someone who brings the best out of everyone. A leader should be nice, encouraging, and a quick thinker. If I could invite any leader to Shorecrest it would be Dwight D. Eisenhower. Dwight D. Eisenhower was a general in World War II. I would invite him because he would lead his soldiers and make sure they were in good hands no matter what.

    • Preston says:

Also Dwight D. Eisenhower ran for President after the war, he made it! This goes to show how much of a leader he is.

  16. Hailey says:

A leader is someone who helps other people, and someone that can help guide other people that need help. A leader is someone that is caring, brave, humble, courageous, and strong. They don’t have to lift dumbells to be strong, they can be strong in other ways. Leaders are people that you look up to for advice, and someone with a heart of gold. A leader is someone who will help other people, even if it doesn’t benefit them. A leader is someone who accepts you for who you are.
If I could invite any leader to our school, it would be Walt Disney . Walt Disney wasn’t just an animator, he joined the Red Cross when he was sixteen, and was stationed in France for a year. He was an inspirational speaker, and he showed that if you go for what you believe in, dreams can come true. Walt Disney was always determined, even when he didn’t know how he would get through something, he found a way to get past it, and made it better than what he had before. He once said “All my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me. You may not realize when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you” He never gave up. He was brave, and when everything seemed gray, he turned it around.

  17. Aidan says:

“In leadership, there are no words more important than trust. In any organization, trust must be developed among every member of the team if success is going to be achieved.” In my mind the most important leadership quality is being trustworthy. A leader is also someone who is respected, disciplined, helpful, and dedicated to their cause. A leader must be someone who is accountable, looked up to for guidance, and is dependable. If I could invite anyone to speak at Shorecrest, I would invite Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Coach Krzyzewski, also known as Coach K, has been the coach of the Duke basketball team for the last 32 years. Coach K is a leader because he has all of these traits. I would invite Coach K to speak because he is also a teacher, motivator, and hero, on and off the court. I think that he would be able to relate well to middle school students, and speak to us about the importance of teamwork and commitment. I would like Coach K to also talk about what to do when you make mistakes and how to become a great leader. While most people to look up to Coach Krzyzewski as an amazing basketball coach, I think that his leadership qualities are what make him so outstanding!

  18. William F. says:

A leader is someone who has responsibility for a group or community, and who tries to act with honesty and fairness. You would not want a leader who says he will do one thing, but does another. You don’t want a leader who makes some people work harder than others. A leader is someone that you can rely on, someone who always tries to do the right thing even if it is not popular. The one leader that I would want to talk at my school is Abraham Lincoln. He was President of our country during its most difficult period, when the states fought against each other over slavery. he stood up for the rights of all people and helped end slavery and bring our country back together. I would like to hear how he did it!

  19. Hunter says:

In my opinion a leader is someone who is a role model, someone who is caring, passionate, responsible and hard working. I think that Derrick Brooks, retired all-pro linebacker who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, would be a perfect fit. He was a great player on the field but more importantly he was a better person off the field. He has a charity called DB55 and that is one of my favorite charities because it helps youth children who do not have much to get a good education and a better life. I think that if he came to Shorecrest he could talk about how to be all of the things I said earlier and to keep working hard at your dream and do whatever you have to do to achieve it.

  20. elizabethS says:

A leader is someone who never give up and who makes you beleav that they can help you and trust you. They are also responsible and honest, and someone who is really nice.iwould chose ‘Martian Luther king jr because he change rights in America with out him the world would not be the same. If he came to our school I would hope he would talk about his jurny of his life and I had a dream speech. A what he went to to get the rights that led African America o freedo.

  21. Scott says:

I think that a leader is someone that you can trust, care, and look up to. The traits that leaders should have is creativeate, strength, and a kind heart, if there a leader I would invite it would be Martin Luther king J.R
Because He was a political leader. This is becaues he help the Africa amarican rights. I would ask him who did feel what was his biggest rodeblock was to achieve.

  22. Felina says:

I think a true leader needs to stand up for themselfs and fight for what they belive in. They also need to be honest, encouraging and passionate. If I could invite a leader to come to Shorecrest, I would pick Rosa Parks because she was’nt afraid of standing up for herself and to speak out loud for civil rights. She also stood out from the crowd and did’nt care what anybody thought of her,

  23. Ethan F says:

A leader is a person with many good traits but the most important is he puts other peoples needs in front of his. I would choose Gorge washington because he lead tons of men and almost froze fighting for this country.

  24. danielle says:

If you are confident, brave and trustworthy you are a hero in my world. You should be confident because no matter how many people are watching you, you can still do what your journey tells you to do. You should be brave because when your on your journey you don’t now what is going to happen. You should be trustworthy because when you meet friends you know that they can trust you. I think heros are made because my hero didn’t always love ballet and do ballet to the best of her ability she worked for that. My hero is Ivan Vsevolozhsky because she was Clara in the first Nutcraker ballet performance.

  25. steven says:

A hero for me is someone who helps someone who helps someone else in a kind way.
A hero is some who is brave and kind.
    My hero is Scott Collins.
